The first regional hackathon on the topic of Transport 1 took place at the Impact Hub Ostrava from 3 to 2018 June 4.0. The event focused on finding trends in transport infrastructure and the interrelationships between public, passenger and, to some extent, freight transport.
Connecting data analysts, programmers and transportation experts
The hackathon was attended by researchers from the fields of data analysis, process automation (RPA), SW developers, programmers, experts with experience in transport and logistics, students, but also junior researchers, who in some cases brought a new perspective on solving the given issue.
Some of the inputs were data provided by hackathon partners, for example: regional public transport (Chaps), transport in the Statutory City of Ostrava and its surroundings (DPO), taxi data (Liftago), data on accidents and traffic restrictions (Eago systems), meteorological data (Meteopres) and anonymized GSM data. Within the Hackathon, the participants themselves also used open data and publicly available databases.
Traffic corridor occupancy, data optimization and sentiment analysis
The event's partners participated as mentors and guides. Keboola and DPO, RODOS and Meteopress, who helped with data processing, application of practical knowledge and final processing of the time sheets during the intensive two-day process.
A total of 6 researchers from all over the Czech Republic participated in the event in 23 teams and focused on the topics of Traffic Corridor Occupancy, Input Data Optimization, Information on Traffic Corridors, Image Sentiment Analysis, Assessment of Taxi and Public Transport Occupancy, and Comparison of Taxi and Public Transport.

The winner of the Hackathon was the Veteráni team, which focused on the topic of taxi and public transport utilization. They created a web application based on maps with an extended visualization of analyzed taxi traffic corridors and visualization of public transport stops. Thanks to the analysis and visualization, it is possible to estimate blind spots in the coverage of the public transport network with respect to the time of day and, conversely, monitor the utilization of taxi services.
A great benefit of the event was the connection of private and public entities on the current topic of transport infrastructure. Interesting data in the hands of experienced developers gave rise to four applications and two statistical outputs in the form of graphs. The applications that were created could be practically immediately integrated for the analysis of transport data, making it possible to realistically verify their functionality and verify the given solutions in long-term practice.
